These assembly plants can be designed as rotary indexing or in-line indexing systems. Fully automatic systems require an appropriate suitability of components for an automated feed and assembly, partially automatic systems are therefore always easier to implement.

Moreover, fully automated in-line indexing systems are categorized according to workpiece holders with loose and inflexible sequencing. The latter permit shorter workpiece holder changes and consequently shorter cycle times, the drawback being that a defect causes the entire plant to come to a standstill. This is not necessarily the case with loose chaining, if a sufficient number of buffer locations has been provided.
